What do you need to know about paper and cardboard recycling?

Paper and cardboard are popular and versatile packaging and printed materials. Both paper and cardboard are readily recyclable, made from natural fibre that can be broken down and re-manufactured into new products.

Despite talk of a paperless society, our consumption of paper products is actually increasing. Much of this is being driven by deliveries and online purchases, dramatically increasing the need for packaging. More positively, many manufacturers are choosing paper and cardboard over plastic packaging, recognising the ready recyclability of natural fibres.

For effective and efficient paper and commerical cardboard recycling, REMONDIS provides comprehensive guidelines on the types of materials that can and cannot be included in our Paper and Cardboard Recycling bins.

FAQs about paper and cardboard recycling

Can paper and cardboard be mixed with other recyclables in the same bin?

It's best to consult with a REMONDIS waste expert about your recycling needs.

Your Paper and Cardboard Recycling bin must only contain paper and cardboard and is processed at a dedicated paper recycling facility.

Co-mingled Recycling bins are also available, which allow several types of mixed recyclable materials (eg. paper, cardboard, glass and cans) to be combined, and these are then separated into their recyclable components at a dedicated Material Recovery Facility. Find out about Co-mingled Recycling

Whether your needs are best served with a Paper and Cardboard Recycling service or a Co-mingled Recycling service depends on the volume of materials you produce, your site, and your unique business needs. Alternatively, might choose dedicated Paper (only) or Cardboard (only) recycling services, depending on your volumes and sustainability ambitions. Talk to us about your needs.

What are the environmental benefits of paper and cardboard recycling in Australia?

Recycling paper and cardboard in Australia helps divert significant waste from landfills, conserve resources, and reduces water and energy usage compared to virgin paper production. More details: Planet Ark.

Moreover, recycling paper and cardboard lowers greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to a cleaner environment. More details: Sustainability Victoria.

By participating in recycling initiatives, businesses support a circular economy and significantly minimise their environmental footprint.

Can REMONDIS help my business become more sustainable through paper and cardboard recycling?

Yes, REMONDIS waste experts can work with your business to improve sustainability by implementing effective paper and cardboard bin collection and recycling practices, which can enhance your brand's eco-friendly reputation and help you comply with industry regulations and standards.

Source separation (putting recyclables into different bins at your premises) is an essential first step in reducing waste to landfill. Our Total Waste Management approach starts with a waste audit to assess the volumes and opportunities in your waste, and proposing recycling pathways where possible.

Whether your needs are best served with a Paper and Cardboard Recycling service, dedicated Paper Recycling (only) bins, dedicated Cardboard Recycling (only) bin, or a Co-mingled Recycling service depends on the volume of materials you produce, your site, and your unique business needs. Please talk to us about your needs.

How does the pricing for paper and cardboard recycling services work?

Pricing for paper and cardboard recycling services depends on various factors, such as the volume of materials to be recycled, pickup frequency, location, contamination levels, and material density. Our REMONDIS waste experts will work with you to develop a customised recycling plan that addresses these factors while fitting your budget and meeting your business's unique needs.

What bin size and type do I need for my business?

REMONDIS offers a wide range of bin sizes and types to cater to the diverse waste management needs of businesses. Some of the commonly offered bin sizes and types include:

Wheelie Bins: These portable and flexible bins are ideal for small to medium-sized businesses generating low to moderate amounts of waste. Available in a range of sizes including 120L, 240L, 660L and 1100L, wheelie bins can be easily moved and placed according to your business's requirements, ensuring you find the perfect fit for your general waste disposal needs

Front Lift Bins: Ideal for commercial and industrial applications, front lift bins provide a larger waste capacity than wheelie bins and maintain a fixed position for efficient waste management. Available in sizes such as 1.5m³, 3m³, and 4.5m³, these bins are designed to accommodate businesses with higher waste generation – bulk paper and cardboard, and industrial paper and cardboard – offering a reliable and effective recycling solution

Compactors: For businesses producing large amounts of compactable waste, compactors can be an efficient solution, helping to reduce waste volume and collection frequency. Compactors are available in various sizes and can be tailored to your specific needs

To determine the appropriate bin size and type for your business, consider factors such as the volume and type of waste generated, available space for bin placement, and the desired waste collection frequency. You can also consult with a REMONDIS waste management expert who will assess your business's requirements and recommend the most suitable bin solution for your needs.

What happens to used paper and cardboard?

After the paper and cardboard is collected, our staff transport the material to a baling facility where the material may be further separated into types and grades before being compacted into bales.

These bales are then sold through our Commodity Trading Desk to recycling plants where it is then washed to remove inks and contaminants.

The resulting material is then mixed with water to create a slurry which is spread using large rollers into large thin sheets.

This is left to dry before it is rolled up, ready to be cut to shape and sent back into the market, to make new products.
