What happens to general waste?
After general waste is collected, it’s taken to a nearby Transfer Station to be consolidated into efficient volumes for transport.
Often a Resource Recovery Facility is the next step, where picking lines remove any larger pieces of recyclable material such as cardboard, metal or wood. Residual waste may then be compacted, packed into specialised trucks and transferred to a landfill facility for disposal.
However, most general waste is destined for landfill.
