Metal is a common material used to create a multitude of items including cans, buildings, cars and other vehicles, machinery and signage. It’s also a very valuable resource as many metals are readily recyclable with available technology, and in most instances it requires less energy and resources to recycle and re-use than to produce virgin metals.
Metals are either ferrous (containing iron, eg. steel, iron) or non-ferrous (which have no iron or iron components, eg. aluminium, copper, zinc, nickel, tin, lead). Non-ferrous metals can be recycled time and time again as they don’t degrade during the recycling process.
Metal waste can be placed into either a yellow co-mingled recycling (insert link to 1.1.3) bins, or REMONDIS can provide dedicated metal waste bins for businesses that need to dispose of large or bulky items.

Once the metal waste is collected, it is transported to a specialist Resource Recovery Facility (RRF) where it is sorted into different types of metals – usually using a magnet to separate ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
Depending on the size of the scrap metal, it is then bundled and transported to a recycling facility, where it is broken down into smaller particles, washed and contaminants (such as small bits of residual plastic) removed. The cleaned metals are then melted down and poured into moulds – a recycled raw material ready for another use.
